Desdemona
Whether it’s the kids in our families or the kid who lives inside all of us, we all face the same variety of emotions that challenge us in life.
From the first days of school or moving away and going to a whole new school, to exploring who you want to be and finding the courage to become who you really are, or discovering how to find beauty in yourself and finding comfort inside your own skin, along with loneliness, the fears we face making mistakes, making new friends and making our way… Desdemona helps navigate all the important emotions of growing up and growing older…
Written and illustrated by retired kindergarten and art teacher Patty Gannon for children from about the age of 5 to 9, Desdemona also resonates with parents and grand-parents of any age.
“Desdemona is Me at 7 and Me at 72.” What a fun and powerful way to share important life lessons and spend quality family time together…
From the time I was very young, I would spend hours drawing and listening to stories. One day I decided I had to tell my own story, and the Desdemona series was born. Since I’m not confident with my writing skills, I would tell my story first through illustrations. Then I would tell the story out loud, and then I would write the words. This seems a little backward, I know, but what can I say? That is the way Desdemona works.
I was a kindergarten teacher, a 2nd-grade teacher, and an art teacher. When I retired, I had a story to tell. Or should I say stories to tell? To my surprise, from where I know not, those stories took shape and found their way to paper.
I take my inspiration from the humor of Shel Silverstein, the wit and edginess of Roald Dahl, and the sweetness of Beatrice Potter. A great mix of very talented writers and illustrators.
Desdemona is me. The adult me. And the kid me. But she is in all of us as we go through life. Her stories let the reader know we are not alone.
